WebbTried Simpson's malted oats for the first time last week. This is the regular malted oats not the Naked ones. They gave off a strong grassy smell that verged on moldy in the mash that I have never gotten from flaked oats. We are sure it is the malted oats because we went back and sampled some from the bags. WebbOats have a smaller kernel than 2-row barley. Naked oats, by definition, have no husk, so they are even slightly smaller than whole or malted oats. Kernels can escape barely milled or unmilled if you've got the gap set wide, such as at 0.043" like many LHBSs do. So yes, a narrower mill gap helps.
